Something Old, Something New…
By Mary Hannah

I'm sure most of us think of this poem when weddings and brides are the subject. But what do we really know about it? There's not too much that is known about it's origin. Although the word sixpence gives us a couple of clues. The sixpence was a coin minted in Britain from 1551 to 1967. This tells us it definitely came from England, but the year is still anybody's guess. Many people think it may have originated in the Victorian Age, 1837 - 1901. Whenever it came about it is one wedding tradition that many brides of today still like to adhere with. Let's see what the phrases are really portraying. "Something old" refers to continuity, bringing something from the bride's past into the new life. This could be just about anything. Many brides like to wear something that belonged to their mother, grandmother or even great grandmother. This could be anything from an old ring that belonged to one of your loved ones or even a veil someone used on their wedding day. "Something new" depicts optimism, good fortune and success in the new life. This is probably the easiest item to come up with. Who doesn't like something new? If you are on a budget and don't want to purchase anything else, maybe your gown or your shoes are new items and either one would work. "Something borrowed" signifies friends and family will always be there for the new bride. A borrowed item can come from anyone.
This might be borrowing mom's pearl necklace or your sister's diamond earrings. "Something blue" conveys fidelity, loyalty and love. Many brides will wear a garter that has a blue ribbon or bow on it. Use your imagination and come up with something else that could be blue. "And a silver sixpence in her shoe," the last phrase in the poem stands for wealth. This is a good luck item that wishes wealth for the new bride. Brides today will use any silver coin, usually a dime, since it's small and not as bothersome as a quarter. With this new found knowledge on this
fun little poem, be creative with the items you select for your wedding day.

DID YOU KNOW?
Traditionally, brides have been thought to be particularly vulnerable to evil spirits and many of the customs and traditions associated with weddings are to provide protection. The veil was originally worn by Roman brides. It was thought that it would disguise the bride and therefore outwit malevolent spirits.

It’s Just a Joke . . .

A police officer in a small town stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street.
" But, officer," the man began, "I can explain."
" Just be quiet," snapped the officer. "I'm going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back."
" But officer, I just wanted to say..."
" And I said to keep quiet! You're going to jail!"
A few hours later the officer looked in on his prisoner and said, "Lucky for you that the chief's at his daughter's wedding. He'll be in a good mood when he gets back."
" Don't count on it," answered the fellow in the cell. "I'm the groom."

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

See, how she leans her cheek upon her hand!

O that I were a glove upon that hand,

That I might touch that cheek!
